Riverboat Wine Voyages S3, Spain
Taste over 50 wines over a series of 10 'voyages', as we explore the famous and the up-and-coming wine regions of the world! Now in its third season, the Riverboat's Wine Voyages gives you the opportunity to learn more about wine whilst enjoying it with friends in a fun and social atmosphere on board Singapore's very own floating F&B and lifestyle venue.
Begin with a welcome sparkling wine and tostada chips. Once everyone is settled in, listen to a short presentation on the day's featured country/region by our guest wine specialist Akimi Yeo, followed by a guided tasting sequence of 4-5 other wines. Feel free to share your thoughts along the way, and ask questions anytime along the journey.
THIS VOYAGE: SPAIN
Begin with one of the world’s favourite Spanish Cava, which comes in a sexy black bottle. Freixenet, located in the rolling hills of Penedes just southwest of Barcelona, believes strongly that life is meant to be enjoyed… and what better way to enjoy life than with a glass of good wine! That will then be followed by a unique Verdejo white wine from Tapena, a vibrant winery that’s as colourful as Spain itself.Freixenet Cordon Negro Cava Brut N
Tapena Verdejo 2015
Then, we move on to the most exciting segment: The battle of the Tempranillos! The most widely-planted red grape in Spain, the Tempranillo varietal tends to showcase aromas of strawberry, red cherry, currant and spice. Spain’s traditional winemaking methods also often contribute aromas of leather, tobacco, and chalky dust to the wines, endowing them with beautiful elegance and sophistication while still being friendly and approachable.
On this voyage, we will be ‘sailing’ from region to region to taste their Tempranillos and Tempranillo-blends, and at the end of the voyage we will vote which is the crowd’s favourite region!
Representing Rioja Alta, the high-altitude hilly area covering most of the western areas of the famed Rioja wine region, we have…Don Jacobo Rioja Crianza 2011
Moving over to Rioja Alavesa, which is essentially part of Rioja Alta but on the opposite side of the Ebro river, let’s make welcome…Artuke Pies Negros Crianza 2014
Wrapping up the Rioja trilogy is Rioja Baja, the lower and flatter eastern part of the region, which will be represented by…Ontanon Reserva 2005
Making our way up north beyond the Rioja region towards the French border, we find the autonomous region of Navarra, historically known for roses (locally, Rosados), but also producing good reds. Let’s give it up for…Pago de Larrainzar Raso Crianza 2010
Next up, a small but historic region halfway along the Duero river, we have Toro, which will be featuring…Alonso del Yerro Paydos 2013
And finally, one of the stars of the Spanish wine indistry, Ribera del Duero. A challenging climate with both hot and cold extremes allow the grapes to become fully ripe while preserving a delicious balance of acidity. Representing this region, and hailing from some of the highest altitude vineyards in Spain, we have…Alonso del Yerro 2012
Come taste and see for yourself the many faces of Tempranillo, and share with us your thoughts on which region is the best producer of this varietal!
